Wollstonecraft Live! and the story of the statue
Wednesday 10 November 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
£4.00
A discussion and book launch on the anniversary of the unveiling of the sculpture in honour of Mary Wollstonecraft by Maggi Hambling which caused controversy with some viewers attempting to cover it up and others praising the originality of the artwork.
In this new book, Anna Birch has written a comprehensive account of the 10-year campaign to raise funds and erect a statue on Newington Green in London in honour of Wollstonecraft, the ‘Mother’ of Feminism.
Kaethe Fine’s play Wollstonecraft Live! was performed to celebrate the regeneration project of Newington Green and to raise awareness of the campaign for a statue honoring the 18th century radical.
The play depicts the shooting of a film about the relationship between Mary Wollstonecraft and the writer William Godwin. Their daughter, Mary, would become an author and write the classic, Frankenstein.
Speakers include: Anna Birch, Kaethe Fine, Alastair Gavin and Richard Rieser. An open Q & A will follow the talk and panel discussion.
