In the 150th anniversary year of Kipling’s birth, academic and journalist Mary Hamer fictionalises the childhood story of Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book, and his sister Trix.  Both intend to be writers, both seek affection, but are hampered by a bitter legacy. Abandoned at the ages of six and three, when their parents returned to India, Rudyard and Trix were left with a strict and god-fearing foster family.

In her award-winning first novel, Hamer goes to the heart of the relationship between a difficult brother and his over-shadowed, troubled sister.
