Annette Messager (1943– ) was born in Berck-sur-Mer in
northern France and was encouraged to pursue art from a
young age by her father who was an architect and amateur
painter. She went on to study at the École Nationale
Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris where she
produced several surrealist sculptures for her final exams.
In 1961, Messager won the grand prize in an international
competition sponsored by Kodak after her mother entered one of her early photographs.
During her career she has made use of a range of materials such as photography, taxidermy,
sculpture, domestic objects, toys, knitting and embroidery in her assemblage of
her works.
