Doris Salcedo (1958– ) is a sculptor, political activist, and
visual artist. Born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, her art
is shaped by her life in Colombia and focuses largely on
the ramifications of the country’s political turmoil. She
studied at the Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano,
focusing on painting and then for a Master’s degree at New
York University, where she was influenced by the work of
Joseph Beuys and his belief in the neccessity that an artist
combines political awareness with art making.
