Garry Hynes (1953–) is an Irish theatre director, Artistic Director and co-founder of
the Druid Theatre Company, founded in 1975 with Mick Lally and Marie Mullen.
Hynes was the first-born child of a family of six, born in her mother’s native town
of Ballaghadereen, Co Roscommon. She moved to Galway with her family in 1965 and
attended the St. Louis Convent at Monaghan and the Dominican Convent secondary
school in Galway, going on to study History & English at University College, Galway.
After meeting fellow student Marie Mullen through the drama society, in 1975, they
joined with a local teacher, Mick Lally, to found Druid Theatre Company in Galway,
which became the first professional theatre company outside of Dublin.
