Magda Isanos (1916-1944) is one of Romania’s most important early twentieth century poets. Isanos also worked as a journalist and lawyer and was involved in left-wing activism. When Isanos was six months old, she contracted polio, which had an impact on her health and mobility for the rest of her life. In 1935, Isanos married, but her marriage broke down a year later, after which she began living with her sister and focused her attention on her poetry and her career in law. A second marriage brought her happiness as well as a daughter, but she suffered great losses in the war when a bomb destroyed her home and most of her manuscripts.
