Senga Nengudi (1943– ) adopted her name in 1974 to suit
her politics of African-American empowerment. She was
born in Chicago, Illinois as Sue Irons. Following the death
of her father in 1949, she went to live with her mother in
Pasadena, California, which disrupted her high school
education due to the segregated school system. She went
on to study art and dance at California State University,
graduating in 1967. She loved dance but chose to be an
artist as she felt it would offer her a longer career. Nengudi
also studied Japanese Culture at Waseda University in Tokyo from 1966-67. She later
